Environmental History of Bee Honey in Costa Rica (1906-2014)

The aim of this present study is to try to highlight the tensions that characterized the development of the honey production in Costa Rica, particularly its competition with the production and sugar consumption, the fight against pests and deforestation. The analysis of agricultural magazines, articles published on the subject, as well as the statistical yearbooks and the agricultural censuses of the period are used. The article begins with a brief location about the emergence of beekeeping in Costa Rica and then delves into the characterization of this activity in the first half of the 20th century. Subsequently, the main situations faced by beekeeping since the 1940s are analyzed with the fight against pests such as locusts and the effect of the arrival of the Africanized bee in the 1980s, to close with some approximations to the current situation in a climate change context.
