Abstract

Environmental management, strategies, and environmental management plans that are implemented by companies to achieve maximum benefits and minimum economic, social, and environmental costs will be analyzed from the perspective of the theory of Complex Adaptive Cycles (CAC). This theory allows for the identification of important situations in the event of environmental impact due to disturbances in the system and the potential absence of social and environmental responsibility by companies. The paper presents a qualitative research paradigm, using techniques such as documentary review, participant observation, and semi-structured interviews. These techniques were applied to ten companies in Popayán, during the period from 1960 to 2014. Among the conclusions, significant transformations were observed during the last decade. However, the companies were unable to achieve a financial, social, and environmental balance, as this process requires investment and commitment from both entrepreneurs and environmental authorities. It is recommended that companies recognize environmental legislation and regulations in order to design and implement management strategies and environmental management plans, with the aim of achieving higher levels of eco-efficiency.
